A Pet Peeve: "Stop it"

So, I went to school yesterday…as I do every Thursday. And it seemed to be a normal day. Woke up early, went swimming, walked to the subway and traveled up to Hunter. When I arrived, I exited the subway, trudged up the stairs, and meandered to my first class.

It was about halfway through the day when I realized that something was off. This day was just a little different than all other days, but, for a while, I could not understand why. As I was waiting for my friend in a hallway, it finally hit me.

Before said friend made an appearance, hordes of students passed by, escaping from their classes and heading to the cafeteria. There were two in particular that stood out to me. They were a couple, obviously, a boy and a girl. He was walking right behind her with both arms wrapped around her waist and she was prancing ahead with the biggest smile. And then I heard it. Those words. With a sound that still grates my ears. She was giggling and half-heartedly batting at his arms while saying “stop it” in a simpering tone.

“Stop it. Stop it. Stoooop iiiiiit.” That’s what I’d been hearing all day. Girls saying to boys ‘stop it’ with smiles and laughter. “Stop it.” So, so many issues with this.

First Issue: To all those couples out there with a PDA problem, STOP spreading your love and happiness in my direction. It might catch and I’d rather not have it, thank you very much.

Second Issue: WHY ARE YOU TELLING HIM TO STOP IT IF YOU WANT THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE!? Are you playing hard to get? Because you’re doing a terrible, terrible job. It’s obvious you’re into him. He’s into you. So, in theory, he should NOT ‘stop it.’ Right? Now you’re just giving him mixed signals. And annoying me. So, please, for the love of moose, stop it.
From now on, only say Stop It if you mean it.
Cynical? Yes. A little unforgiving? Try a lot. You might say I’m just a bitter old lady (well…twenty year old lady, at least) but I’m actually…just really annoyed and I want to stop hearing that.

So, if people could just not say that around me, that’d be great.
